Nevertheless, it is highly productive to reexamine and rethink the visual representations that circulated with these currencies, for they allow us to observe how the state negotiates—and the use of this verb is not innocent—national imaginaries beyond the realm of literature or the periodical press. But perhaps this reexamination should not be limited to the images displayed in paintings or on coins, stamps, and bills. Among the other components to study are the politics that oriented the construction of monuments for the centenary celebrations that took place across Latin America during the first decades of the twentieth century—a task for another occasion.

In several Latin American countries, the “absent body” of the disappeared and their children—presented in movies, photographs, monuments, painting installations, protests, stories, and other discourses—became a central figure in the public sphere at the end of the twentieth century, highlighting that the renewal of the dream nation contains a corporal void that is a sign of the violence done to the nation still in formation.
