84 Stanly's friends, as a complimentary gesture, placed his name before the General Assembly in 1828 as a candidate for governor and he received 21 votes on the first ballot to 66 for James Iredell, 60 for Richard Dobbs Spaight, and 24 for William Polk. On the second ballot, his name was withdrawn; and on the third ballot, Iredell was elected with 104 votes to 80 for Spaight, Polk withdrawing. In January, 1830, the legislature paid him the further compliment of placing his portrait in the House of Commons.
Spaight was reelected, 297 to 251, owing mainly, it was believed, to a broadside issued by Stanly in which he righteously declared that "though five hundred gallons of Rum should be started in opposition to me, I will not treat" the voters. He continued: "Who, in his calm moments, can look without grief and shame, upon the picture of an election scene, in which the Candidate with his jug, and the Voter with his glass, perhaps reeling together, belch forth their patriotism and fidelity! " On election night, the Spaight party held a victory procession in New Bern, complete with music and banners.
They met John H. Bryan, a member of Congress from the New Bern district, and visited in the drawing rOom with the other guests. "We had a great crowd," Bryan informed his wife the next day. "90 Stephen F. Miller, dUring a visit to New Bern from Georgia in February, 1829, found his "noble features" distorted by his affliction.
