Colonel Henry B. Margeson of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, generously donated his time to provide access to the collections of the Portsmouth Athenaeum and copies of key documents. Peter Drummey, librarian of the Massachusetts Historical Society, promptly and graciously responded to my request for photocopied material. Robert Calhoon of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro suggested additional sources on loyalists; Brian Cuthbertson, public records archivist of the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, kindly answered questions about material in his book on John Wentworth's life in Nova Scotia.

Hutchinson's situation was like Wentworth's in many ways. His forebears migrated to New England in the 1630s, the same time as Wentworth's, and in fact it is likely their ancestors knew each other. Thomas Hutchinson descended from a line of successful merchants in Massachusetts, just as John Wentworth did in New Hampshire. Other aspects of the two men's backgrounds are remarkably similar. Hutchinson's family before him was actively involved in provincial politics, and they sent young Thomas to Harvard College.

When needed, he obtained additional instructions or permission to disregard instructions for Wentworth; he was able to prevent disputes involving Wentworth from reaching the Privy Council, and he kept the governor apprised of any adverse gossip circulating in England that might be detrimental to his position. From Whitehall to the White Mountains, Benning Wentworth controlled his own political destiny. Through a monopoly of New Hampshire's prime resources, land and timber, he was able not only to enrich his relations but to accumulate a personal fortune large enough to offset any worry about the assembly's willingness to grant him a proper salary each year.
