When the pile of scrap reaches a predetermined weight, it is automatically strapped and conveyed onto a storage conveyor. The scrap handling system was supplied by Wennmec of Sweden. It has a rated capacity of 600 pieces per hour and routinely operates at that rate. 2. Anode Preparation A system designed to prepare anodes in loads, ready for charging directly into the plating cells was installed in 1987. This machine is also located in the machinery bay adjacent to the tankhouse. It is fed by an elevated rail transfer wagon system that automatically delivers loads of anodes, as they are cast, directly into the anode preparation in-feed conveyor.

Gt^rt^r $hm Stripping An automatic starting sheet stripping machine designed and manufactured by Wennmec was installed in 1988. This unit has a rated capacity of 400 pieces per hour. The nature of our operation necessitates that it routinely operates at this rate. While the design capacity has been attained over short periods of time, a number of modifications will likely be necessary in order to sustain these rates. The Copper Refinery is actively pursuing this project. The starting sheet stripping machine consists of a feed conveyor that receives crane-loads of titanium blanks.

Ferric iron should be less than 2 g/L. This pregnant solution is pumped to the tankhouse for electrowinning. There are two commonly used electrowinning systems. In what is generally termed conventional electrowinning, some of the electrolyte is passed through a relatively small number of starter cells (about 10% of total) where copper is deposited on stainless steel or titanium cathodes. These cathodes are removed daily and the thin copper sheets removed from each side of the blanks. These starting sheets are then assembled with copper loops and a hanger bar and placed in the commercial cells where they remain for about one week to grow to full thickness cathodes, each weighing up to about 100 kg.
